| Your Planet Needs You! scoops Sustainability Award Added:26 March 2009 The Your Planet Needs You! team was awarded the Young Achiever of The Year in tonight’s 2009 City of Whitehorse Sustainability Awards. The award recognsied the excellent work that the team has done during the two years that it has been broadcast. The award was accepted at the Box Hill Performing Arts Centre by Lucy,Bella,Anna,Zac and Miani on behalf of the team members who couldn’t attend. Amongst the audience were two of our presenters,Zac and Anna,as well as our Associate Producer,Viv. They were all invited to attend by Jack and Kim and were given an opportunity to interview them before any other media representatives. Lucy is City of Whitehorse Young Person of The Month The City of Whitehorse has announced the Young Person of The Month for July 2008. We are thrilled to announce that one of our presenters was chosen to receive this very important award. Not only does Lucy present on Your Planet Needs You!,she also plays hockey,coaches Auskick and acts as a Peer Counsellor at her school. All of this while competing year 12. Lucy,the team are thrilled with your nomination and wish you all the best for the rest of the year. What’s happening at Blackburn Lake? The Blackburn Lake Environmental Education Park (BLEEP) are a community organisation who exist to provide positive solutions for all stakeholders that will protect the flora &fauna around Blackburn Lake Sanctuary from destruction. They are having a special event on Tuesday 24 June –a Sustainability Street Meeting featuring guest speakers Dr Michael Ambrose (talking about sustainable house design) and Patrick O’Neil (speaking about permaculture). Winners at Whitehorse Sustainability Awards The annual Whitehorse Sustainability Awards were conducted this evening at the Box Hill Arts Centre. Wonderful World Media Network took out the Mayor’s choice award and received three other nominations,included “Highly Commended”. Whitehorse Sustainable Living Week –13 to 20 April 2008 The Whitehorse City Council’s Sustainable Living Week will be held from 13-20 April 2008. The week aims to inform,involve and encourage the whole community – with the theme “Make a difference;At home,at work in your community. A diverse program of events will take place over the eight days,covering difference themes,such as water,energy,transport and waste. The answer:Ask the people of Sydney to turn off their lights for one hour. On 31 March 2007,2.2 million people and 2100 Sydney businesses turned off their lights for one hour –Earth Hour. If the greenhouse reduction achieved in the Sydney CBD during Earth Hour was sustained for a year,it would be equivalent to taking 48,616 cars off the road for a year. With Sydney icons like the Harbour Bridge and Opera House turning their lights off,and unique events such as weddings by candlelight, the world took notice. Inspired by the collective effort of millions of Sydneysiders,many major global cities are joining Earth Hour on 29 March 2008,turning a symbolic event into a global movement.
